The first day of spring will be cooler than average in Toronto, with a
special weather statement warning of strong winds and blowing snow
north, east and west of the city.
“Mother Nature may still be on winter vacation,” CityNews weather specialist Frank Ferragine said Thursday.
“It’s not terrible but temperatures will not be bouncing up to seasonal averages by the weekend.”
Spring officially arrives on Thursday at 12:57 p.m. ET.
Environment Canada warned that snow is expected for areas east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, while strong and gusty winds could be a concern in Durham Region.
There’s a high of 5 C in Thursday’s forecast, with a potential for flurries. Last year, the first day of spring also saw flurries in the forecast.
“Last year, for spring’s arrival, we were actually colder than it is right now. We had a high of just -1 C in 2013,” 680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said.
It’s a far cry from 2012, when Toronto broke a warm-weather record and fog blanketed the GTA. The city reached 21.9 C at Pearson International Airport, breaking the record of 18.3 C set in 1976.
